Point-to-point scripts are fragile. Ellucian Ethos gives Banner a standard API layer. How to move without a big bang.

**Short answer:** Start with a catalogue of every integration and score each by criticality and fragility. Then migrate one integration at a time using the strangler pattern: build the API-based flow alongside the legacy one, run both in parallel and compare outputs, and switch off the old job once results match. Add logging and alerting at the API layer as you go.

Ask any Banner team how many integrations they run and the honest answer is usually "more than we have documented". Nightly SQL extracts, flat files dropped on SFTP servers and scripts written by someone who left years ago keep the campus running, until an upgrade breaks one.

**Ellucian Ethos** offers a better foundation: a standard data model, REST APIs and change notifications. See [what Ethos is](https://www.itcadence.com/blog/what-is-ellucian-ethos).

## Why move now

- **Upgrade safety**: versioned APIs are less likely to break when Banner changes.
- **Security**: scoped API keys replace shared database credentials.
- **Near real time**: change notifications push updates as they happen.
- **Cloud readiness**: API-based integrations are a prerequisite for most SaaS moves.

## Start with an integration catalogue

List every integration with source, target, frequency, data elements and owner. Score each by criticality and fragility. Fragile, high-value integrations go first.

## Strangle, don't rewrite

Build the new flow alongside the old one, run both in parallel and compare outputs, then switch off the legacy job. One integration at a time, no big bang.

> **Tip:** Where a delivered Ethos resource does not cover your data, business process APIs or custom Ethos extensions can fill the gap.

## Observe everything

An API layer gives you one place to log, monitor and alert. Track error rates, latency and backlogs, and route failures to the right team automatically.

## Frequently asked questions

### What if Ethos doesn't have a resource for our data?

Business process APIs or custom Ethos extensions can often fill gaps without returning to direct table access.

### Should we migrate all integrations at once?

No. Migrate incrementally, starting with fragile, high-value integrations.
